Job vacancy: Mandarin-speaking Children’s class teacher
Published January 27, 2007 announcements Closed

Reflections (the new fluorescent name for Ruhi Book 1) has never been so striking and malleable.
For all those of us that swore off plasticine years ago, learning the hard way that though it was salty it was not quite digestable, the oily art of pasticine-modelling has made a mighty comeback!
Few of our friends could hold back their “wows” when they received an invite for a “creative-arts meditation night” on the Journey of the Soul.
*Latest Learning* on this Reflections art-nique: Discussing the quotation before getting into the meditation helps the participants to really connect with the writings.
The recipe is quite simple. The only ingredient they forgot to list was “LotsOfLurrrvee”. That should do it.
A lovely teaching moment shared by Chef Naren:
After morning prayers, Hokkien Honey and I headed out to One Utama. As she was browsing around the baby stores, I allowed myself to be distracted by the plasma tvs and the home theater systems in Jusco.
We then bumped into the friendly family folks we met at a Hari Raya lunch and whose son is attending Maggie Mei’s children class and also the mother who is interested in becoming a children’s class teacher. Hmm… what a coincidence!
As Honey was engaged in a conversation with the wife, the husband and I hit it off. Some very interesting and unexpected things happened. As I asked their little son if he liked the children class, a swift smile and a nod of approval quickly showed on his face and what happened next was most surprising to me. Right there in the middle of Jusco, his father made the boy recite “O God guide me” and to my astonishment the little one recited it because his mom has been helping him memorize!! Oh, how sweet were those words coming from the boy’s mouth!
At lunch, the conversation took a more focused path on child education. The wife was just so anxious to introduce her siblings and their children to us as she wants her sisters and their children to be involved in Baha’i children’s classes. So many things were shared and they genuinely felt it was so important for their son to be attending children’s class.
They shared all their concerns and it was just so perfect how everything just gelled together. I am now more than sure that inviting and offering that dear couple Reflections (Ruhi Book 1) as part of an “empowerment package” for the family is the way to go.
In case you were wondering how we made the play-doh for the last reflection meeting, here’s the recipe:
Ingredients
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Food colouring of your choice
Steps
- Mix all ingredients.
- Cook over low heat for exactly 3 minutes. (If you overcook it, it won’t last long.)
- Stir well until it sticks together, forming a ball of dough.
- Keep cool and later store in an air-tight plastic container.
Makes 1 ball of play-doh.
Tip
It’s a great way to be creative in expressing one’s thoughts on the writings.
Better still, it works well with adults, JYs and kiddies!
Fun for all!
While waiting for the teams to share some of the reports from the Teaching Campaign and the overall 2nd cycle we had, let’s take a look at some of the photos of Damansara Team’s storytelling session.
This time, the stories we had are on the virtue ‘truthfulness’. Majority of the children attended were below 6 years old, and mostly are their first time. The children surely had enjoyed Uncle Crawford’s paint-and-tell session, Sally singing with Kippy and Duckie, Uncle Zhien and Aunty Margie acting as woodcutter and water fairy, the junior youth helping out with another paper-puppet show, and definitely the arts and craft session, plus the yummy mouth-watering kiddy-food time. Can’t wait for the next storytelling, don’t ya?
If you have missed the reflection meeting, you have missed a whole lot of learning opportunity! Naren shared with us how important it is to rely on the Writings when we teach the Faith, Aunty Maureen spoke on her challenges in conducting book 1 with friends, Uncle Munusamy talked about audacity to teach, Rajadorai related his experience on the Holy Day celebration, and Li Lin touched on her book 1 experiences. The spirit was high and everyone went back, all geared up for the Teaching Campaign!

Is this what we do at the teaching campaign these days? Click for more pics.
We also learnt a new song that day, it’s called “I sing with you…“
I’ll sing with you
teach with you
play with you and laugh
But it won’t be long I have to go
The times we have
I’ll treasure them
Memories will remain
and say the word we know Allah’u'Abha
There’s a place
for you all in my heart
a place where love can grow
Baha’u'llah knows coz it shows and we’ll…
Teach the cause
Baha’u'llah’s faith
’til we reach every place
and say the word we know Allah’u'Abha
